www.spearmintbaby.com, a trend-setting, collaborative site dedicated to what’s cool in the world of kids, was ranked as the second most popular baby site in May at topbabyblogs.com, a site that tracks the best blogs for babies, moms and dads.
And Spearmintbaby.com’s founder and owner, Shari Lott, is pretty surprised.
“I just thought blogging would be a simple and easy way to answer everyone’s questions about my pregnancy” Lott explained. “ I never thought it would be a business and that people would be so interested in the things I like.”
Lott’s blogging journey began in early 2008 when she started her own private blog to track little things friends and family kept asking her about her pregnancy. Things like: was she showing yet, what was she reading and learning about motherhood, what type of things was she getting for the nursery. But over time, the former food scientist found that her opinion and her tastes mattered, not just to her, but to her friends (and their friends, and their friends).
And so, when little Harper was born, Lott decided that all the cool stuff she was talking about on her private site might just be interesting to other moms. Launched in January 2009, Spearmintbaby.com boasts the tagline “Fresh Ideas For Baby” and has become the baby fashion buzz site that grabs what’s unique and interesting in the land of strollers and diapers and splashes it across the page of a site where moms and others can search, chat and share experiences. Past features have included new and vintage products along with one of a kind hand made items from truly unique artisans.
The site pulled in more than 31,000 page impressions in May and more than 8,000 people visited the site during the month from as far away as Australia, Kuwait, Brazil and Spain. More importantly, the numbers just keep growing. Each month sees the audience base jumping by between 25% and 50% and they are ready, willing and able to buy, especially when the item is hip, trendy and unique.
To hear Lott tell it, the progression from personal site to public site was natural. “ It was hard to find really unique and interesting stuff in one place, so I thought if I was interested in those things, maybe other people would be too,” said Lott.
And as the audience has grown so too has the number of advertisers, up from just a few in February to more than ten in late May. The reason for the jump is not hard to grasp. Lott has struck a chord with parents ( 99% women) who want high quality products that are different from the masses. Rachel Grande from www.beyondthebox.etsy.com said “I noticed a surge in views on my newest baby booties today and so I thought to check your blog. Sure enough, there were my booties, front and center.” Rachel is not alone in her experience with Spearmint Baby;
And so, Lott recently launched a second site, www.spearmintdecor.com which provides unique decorating ideas for the modern home. Following the spearmint brand of what is “fresh in baby design” the site showcases rooms and spaces that are far from typical, yet stylish and elegant.
According to Lott, www.spearmintdecor.com is another natural progression. “I think that mothers go through stages just like their kids. We move from one set of needs to another. As I see different experiences, I just share them. And if it means creating another site, then I do it. It’s that simple,” explains Lott.
And that fresh.
