Falling Diamond Prices Good News For Couples, But Caution Is Advised.

PRLog (Press Release) – May 06, 2009 – The internet marketing of loose diamonds has made the separation between retail and wholesale increasingly thin, according to Graduate Gemologist, Kim Shaffer. The downturn in the economy has also hit the diamond business hard. “Prices may be starting to level, but we have seen a steady decline since September of last year.” he states.
This is good news for couples who are in the market for a diamond engagement ring, but Kim advises caution. “I have seen some really awful diamonds purchased from internet sellers by people who thought they were getting a bargain.”
Mr. Shaffer is not in the business of selling diamonds. He is an independent Graduate Gemologist offering his services to the public, free of charge, over the internet. A couple lets him know what they are looking for, in terms of size, cut, and quality. He shops for them and then recommends particular diamonds to them he has found, diamonds he believes are the very best available, given their budget. Kim makes recommendations. It is entirely up to the couple what they do with the information. He is not involved in the transactions in any way.
Mr. Shaffer took a consumer advocate position in the industry in the 1980s with his production of a consumer education video, The Diamond Buying Guide. He says, “This feels very natural to me, to be offering my services to the public in this way.”
